Чемпион мира продемонстрировал серьезную подготовку и в сложной борьбе захватил инициативу. Над белым королем сгущались тучи, но Каруана действовал очень хладнокровно, отбив натиск соперника. В окончании уже Карлсен недооценил активность белых ладей, но отделался легким испугом, — вскоре на доске возникло ладейное окончание «три на две на одном фланге», и партнеры согласились на ничью.
